Text Box: 9/11 Day of Service 2010
They Give Every Day.  Teens Give Today.

In honor of the 9/11 Day of Service, the teens from the Volunteer Center Youth Coalition will be holding a literacy and fine arts contest. The submissions of this contest will be complied and printed into the first annual Tribute of Legacy Through Creativity (TLC) Book.  These books will then be distributed to first responders, Police Officers and Fire Fighters, around the South Bay and surrounding communities on the weekend of September 11, 2010.

This year's theme is "Remembering and Honoring our Communities First Responders; They Give Every Day.  We Give Today."  VCYC 9/11 Day of Service Chair and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School junior, Lorilynn Lomeli, shares, "this day is to open our eyes and see what is truly going on around us; ergo, seeing our heroes and all they have given us.  They are the light that reigns down in the darkness of the inevitable chaos that surround us.  They devote their lives to serve, protect, and save us on daily commutes, so we dedicate this one day."

The Volunteer Center Youth Coalition is looking for youth who are gifted in writing and visual arts to submit their entries to The Volunteer Center, South Bay-Harbor-Long Beach by Wednesday, August 11, 2010. They are accepting short stories, poems, essays, drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures.  The first place winners in each category will be given the opportunity to join VCYC members on September 11, 2010 to distribute the TLC books to local fire and police stations.

The Volunteer Center Youth Coalition is also in need of sponsorships and donations in order to support the service day, the printing and publishing of the TLC books, the transportation to the various police and fire stations, and to offer spectacular prizes for those teens who have shared their talents in honor of first responders. Sponsorship donations would be greatly appreciated from any individuals, organizations, or corporations to help counterbalance the costs.

To submit an entry, become a sponsor, donate, or to learn more, please visit The Volunteer Center's website at www.volctr-sobay.org or contact Volunteer Center Youth Coalition's Vice President of Programming, Lexi Later, at VCYCyouthEvents@gmail.com.  You can also reach The Volunteer Center’s Youth Coordinator, Katie Kang, at (310) 212-5009.
